É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Lumber For É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Builders

The UAF Cooperative Extension is working with the É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Fire Protection (ADFFP) to develop a É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Lumber Grading Program and issue certificates to authorize individuals to grade load-bearing dimensional lumber that is produced by sawmill operators in É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ.

Diversity In Recreational Use Areas

UAF researchers are studying how use of recreational areas across racial and ethnic groups manifests both in urban É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ communities and across populations. Through collaboration with federal and community partners, the researchers are gathering data on the use of outdoor recreational facilities. It will contribute to a broader understanding of the relationship between recreation facilities use and physical activity to inform management decisions regarding development and maintenance of outdoor recreational resources in É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ.

Spruce Beetles

Researchers at UAFÉ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ™s Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Stations are conducting initial work observing beetle infestation in white spruce trees in É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ. The researchers are collecting data on physiological variables in the trees, such as water content, temperature, electrical conductivity, sap flux and growth, as well as meteorological variables in order to better understand the current and future implications of the outbreak.

Optimal Firewood Harvesting

Researchers at UAFÉ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ™s Agricultural Forestry and Experiment Stations are studying tree water levels throughout the year to determine when trees are at their driest, and what causes them to get to their driest levels. The study will provide important information to É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØns who use wood to heat their homes or who sell seasoned firewood and contribute to efforts to reduce the impact on air quality caused by burning unseasoned wood.

Informing É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØns É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØÉ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ™s Renewable Resources

É«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØÉ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ™s Renewable Resource Extension Act program provides education and outreach on forestry issues such as forestry health, management and stewardship to the public, private landowners and natural resource managers in tribal, state and federal government.
